Hoya thailandica is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya thailandica is a climbing plant with twisting shoots that branch out at irregular intervals. The shoots are cylindrical, somewhat succulent and glabrous. The internodes are 10 to 20 cm (rarely up to 25 cm) long. The leaves are stalked, the petioles are 4 to 6 cm long and 2 to 2.5 mm thick. The leathery leaf blades are ovate to elliptical, 8 to 12 cm long and 6 to 8 cm wide. The apex is finely pointed, the base rounded, wedge-shaped. The top and bottom are bare, the top is shiny, the bottom is rather matt. The leaf nerve consists of 3 to 4 pairs.

The downward-hanging, umbel-shaped inflorescence with hemispherical upper side arises from the leaf axils and contains 10 to 15 flowers. The inflorescence stalk is 4 to 6 cm long and glabrous. The flower stalks are 2.5 to 4 cm long. The ciliate, pale green sepals are boat- to hood-shaped, 6 to 8 mm long and 6 to 7 mm wide. The white, wheel-shaped corolla has a diameter of 2 cm when spread out. The corolla lobes are broadly ovate, 5 mm long and 6 mm wide and sharply pointed. They are downy-haired on top, the edges are curved back, the outside is bald. The secondary crown is purple and 7 mm in diameter. The horizontally spread out corolla lobes are ovate, 3 mm long and 2.5 mm wide. They are sunk concave in the middle on the upper side and deepened in grooves on the underside. The outer extension is round, the inner extension is pointed and ascending. The stylus head is approximately square in cross section and conical at the top. The pollinia are elongated, approx. 1 mm long and 0.3 mm wide. The caudiculae are winged. The anther extensions cover the stylus head. Fruits and seeds were not observed.

Similar species

According to the habit and the shape of the leaves, Hoya thailandica is closest to Hoya australis subsp. tenuis related. However, characteristic of Hoya thailandica are the long inflorescence stalks and the large, boat- to hood-shaped sepals.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species is limited to the region around the mountain Doi Inthanon in the province Chiang Mai , Thailand. The species grows there in evergreen mountain rainforests at an altitude of 2000 m above sea level.
