Type | Tabular volcano |
The Hrútfell is a 1410 m high table volcano in the Icelandic highlands . Its volume is given by Eason et al. (2015) estimated at 11.5 km 3 , which means that the amount of lava expelled - it is assumed that tabular volcanoes are mostly of monogenic origin - almost comes close to the infamous lakia eruptions of 1783.
The table volcano is located east of Langjökull near the highland slope Kjölur and is covered by a 10 km² glacier with five glacier tongues. Similar to Herðubreið , it was formed under a glacier in the Ice Age and only penetrated beyond it in the last phase of the eruption, so that a hood of lava layers can be found on top.
The Þverbrekknamúli hut is located near the mountain .
