Hubert Soudant

Hubert Soudant (born March 16, 1946 in Maastricht ) is a Dutch conductor.

Soudant studied horn and conducting in Maastricht. He has won several conducting competitions, such as the Besançon Competition (1969), the Herbert von Karajan Competition in Berlin (1971) and the Cantelli Competition in Milan (1973).

From 1981 to 1983 Soudant was General Music Director of the Nouvel Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France , then until 1988 Chief Conductor of the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra . In 1988 he became director of the Arturo Toscanini Orchestra in Parma. From 1994 Soudant was music director of the Orchester National des Pays de la Loire (until 2003) and chief conductor of the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg , whose principal guest conductor he was until 2004. In 2004 he became an honorary citizen of Salzburg.

In 1999 Soudant became Principal Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra , which he has led as Chief Conductor since 2004. As a guest conductor he worked a. a. with the Berlin Philharmonic , the Bamberg Symphony , the Vienna Symphony , the Oslo Philharmonic , the Stockholm Philharmonic and the RAI Orchestra in Turin. He played the Italian premiere of Olivier Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony with the La Scala Orchestra in Milan . With the Mozarteum Orchestra he devoted himself particularly to the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Brucker ,

Soudant's production of La clemenza di Tito in Japan 2006 was named the best performance of the year. He had great success with a cycle of Schubert works from 2008-09 in Japan. He received the Grand Prix du Disque for the recordings of the 4th, 5th and 6th symphonies and the violin concerto by Tchaikovsky as well as the piano concertos by Franz Liszt . He made a complete recording of Beethoven's piano concertos with the Mozarteum Orchestra and the pianist Valeri Affanasjew .
