Huernia thuretii is a species of plant from the subfamily of the asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae). The species is named after the French botanist Gustave Adolph Thuret (1817–1875).

features

Huernia thuretii forms stem succulent , upright shoots that are up to five centimeters high and 0.8 to 1 centimeter thick and form clumps. The shoots are usually 4-ribbed in cross-section (up to max. 6-ribbed) and densely covered with pointed warts. The flowers are solitary, point outwards or upwards. They are distributed randomly on the shoots, often even several on one shoot. They open one after the other at short intervals. The flower stalk is up to 2.5 cm long but can also be missing. Multiple flowers can sit on one stem (if there is a stem). The sepals are up to about 5 mm long. The flower measures about 2.5 cm in diameter. It is cream-colored on the outside, light yellow to greenish yellow and sometimes red-brown dotted. Inside it is cream-colored, light yellow, yellowish to rarely brown with pink to dark brown concentric lines or rows of dots. The crown tube is spherical to rarely tubular and chestnut brown at the base. The opening is slightly narrowed. The petal tips are triangular, the apices pointed and flat. Often they are curved somewhat longitudinally convex, i. H. the edges of the tips are slightly bent downwards. They can be weakly papilous on the inside towards the crown tube , apically they are usually finely papilous. The interstaminal dark crimson to black colored corolla lobes are triangular or square, rounded at the edges, bidentate or deeply lobed. The staminal corolla lobes are orange-brown to black in color, 1.5 to 2 mm long and stand upright. They taper apically and meet there. A nectar drop often forms here. The pollinia are brownish yellow in color.

Geographical distribution

The species occurs in the Republic of South Africa ( Eastern Cape Province ) and Namibia .

Taxonomy and nomenclature

There are currently two varieties :

  • Huernia thuretii var. Thuretii
  • Huernia thuretii var. Primulina (NE Brown), this variety differs from the typical variety by the larger, uniformly light yellow colored flowers and by the slightly longer, creeping shoots.
