Huetar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Huetar is an extinct indigenous language of Central America , which the family of Chibchan languages belonged. It was spoken in what is now Costa Rica and Panama and was the lingua franca of the Central Valley ( Valle Central ) of Costa Rica before the Spanish conquest . During the 17th century, the Huetar became extinct, as the surviving indigenous inhabitants of the Central Valley adopted Spanish as a colloquial language. The Huetar was closely related to the Maleku and is considered by some linguists as a dialect of the same.
