Huggy Bear was a British riot grrrl band from the 1990s.

history

Inspired by the American riot grrrl movement by bands like Bikini Kill , Huggy Bear met in Brighton in 1991 . The following year they released their debut EP Rubbing the Impossible to Burst on the London record label Wiiija .

This was followed in 1993 by a split EP with Bikini Kill, which was titled Our Troubled Youth / Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah and was also released in the USA. When the group appeared on Channel 4's TV show The Word that same year, there was a scuffle in the audience. The Melody Maker then published a cover story about the band.

After the release of further EPs and compilations, the band members increasingly turned to solo projects. Keyboardist Chris Rawley and guitarist Jo Johnson released an EP with other musicians in 1994 under the title The Element of Crime . After lead guitarist Jon Slade left, the band's first and last full album followed in November 1994 with Weaponry Listens to Love .
