Hughes Island is a small and icy island off the Pennell coast of East Antarctica, Victoria . It is the easternmost of the Lyall Islands and is just outside the eastern part of the entrance to Yule Bay .
The United States Geological Survey mapped them using their own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1960 to 1963. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1970 after Lieutenant Ronald M. Hughes of the US Navy, a doctor at McMurdo Station in 1966.
