Hugo Borchardt (born June 6, 1844 in Magdeburg , † May 8, 1924 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was a German weapons designer . His most famous developments were the Sharps-Borchardt model 1878 rifle and the Borchardt C93 pistol .

Life

Borchardt emigrated to the USA in 1860 and from 1872 he was Managing Director of Pioneer Breech-Loading Arms Co. (Trenton, Mass.). In 1874, he was a foreman for Singer Sewing Machine Co. , then he was an employee of Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. moved later to the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. and then from 1 June 1876 CEO of Sharps Rifle Co. After Bankruptcy of this company In 1881 Borchardt returned to Europe and became an employee of Fegyver és Gépgyár Részvéntarsaság in Budapest, where he became manager from 1890. From 1890 to 1892 he worked again in the USA as a consultant for Remington Arms in the development of the Lee rifle ( English Lee Rifle, Model of 1895, caliber 6-mm ) for the US Navy and the Marine Corps.

He developed the cartridge 7.65 × 25 mm and then the self-loading pistol C93. In 1893 Borchardt cooperated with Ludwig Loewe & Company in Berlin, where the C93 was manufactured in series. On the basis of the Borchardt C93 pistol, Georg Luger developed a pistol by the turn of the century that retained the knee joint lock of the C93, but was smaller and more practical. This first parabellum pistol appeared in 1900.

Hugo Borchardt also held patents on non-firearms: a rock drill , shirt collar former, gas burner, ball bearings , a wire tensioner, and electrical equipment.
