Hugo Dürrenmatt ( June 24, 1876 in Thun - April 5, 1957 in Bern ) was a Swiss lawyer and politician.

Life

Dürrenmatt, the son of journalist and politician Ulrich Dürrenmatt , studied after attending school in Herzogenbuchsee and a visit to the outdoor school Bern Jus in Lausanne, Munich, Bern and Paris. In 1898 he received the Bern advocacy patent and the Dr. iur.

From 1901 to 1920 he had a law firm in Herzogenbuchsee, and in 1908 he was an editor at the Berner Volkszeitung . From 1908 to 1920 he was the Bernese Grand Council (conservative-democratic faction, after the merger a member of the farmers, trade and citizens' party ). From 1920 to 1927 he was president of the cantonal tax recourse committee and from 1927 to 1946 government councilor (poor and church directorate, 1934 judiciary, 1945 finance directorate).

Dürrenmatt supported a Christian, conservative worldview. He saw himself as an opponent of liberalism, but was not a militant fighter like his father. The focal point of his political activities in the service of the Canton of Bern was the idea of ​​justice for the people as a whole. He campaigned for National Council proporz, Switzerland's accession to the League of Nations and women's suffrage . With the church law of 1945 he erased the last traces of the Kulturkampf and thus laid the foundation for denominational peace in the canton of Bern.

He was married to Maria Kohler. His son was the historian, publicist and liberal-national-conservative politician Peter Dürrenmatt (1904-1989).
