Hugo I (Burgundy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo I (* 1057 ; † August 29, 1093 in Cluny ) was Duke of Burgundy from 1076 to 1078.

Hugo was the grandson and successor of Duke Robert I and the son of Robert's son Heinrich (* around 1035, † around 1070) and his wife Sibylla, a daughter of Count Berengar Raimund I of Barcelona .

He married Sibylle (Jolanthe) (* 1058; † 1078), a daughter of Count Wilhelm I of Nevers . When she died in 1078, he went to Spain, where he helped King Sancho I of Aragon in the fight against the Moors and in the conquest of the Kingdom of Navarre . He then handed over the Duchy of Burgundy to his brother Odo I in November or October 1079 and retired to the Cluny Monastery , where he died and was buried in 1093.
