Hugo III (Maine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo III of Maine (French: Hugues ; † between 1014 and 1016) was an Earl of Maine since 992 . He was the son and successor of Count Hugo II of the Second House of Maine .

Like his father, Hugo did not recognize the first Capetian king Hugo Capet and allied himself with Count Odo I of Blois . But after he died in 996 and King Robert II the Pious accepted his sons to his court, Hugo was also forced to recognize the new balance of power. In addition, he had to give Count Fulko III. of Anjou , who was a loyal follower of the king, and thus recognize him as liege lord of Maine. Nevertheless, Hugo continued to seek proximity to the House of Blois and in the following years supported Count Odo II against the Norman Duke Richard II. Together with Count Galéran III. von Meulan they attacked Normandy in 1013 and besieged the castle of Tillières-sur-Avre . There they were surprised by Duke Richard and put to flight. Hugo escaped captivity by hiding in a sheepfold and then disguised as a shepherd to make his way to Le Mans .

Hugo had two sons. The elder of the same name died before his father, the second Herbert I followed him as count.
