Hugo Justin Race (born May 24, 1963 in Melbourne ) is an Australian blues rock guitarist, composer and band leader.

Life

From 1983 he played guitar as one of the founding members of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds , stayed for two years and was featured on their first record. From 1985 to 1986 he played with the Australian band The Wreckery . Since 1988 he has been the singer, songwriter and guitarist of his own band Hugo Race & The True Spirit , which previously played in changing line-ups and is currently composed of Chris Hughes (drums, percussion), Marta Collica (keyboard, vocals), Michelangelo Russo (trumpet, trombone ), Giovanni Ferrario (bass, vocals) and Hugo Race.

Hugo Race grew up in a hippie community in Melbourne, Australia and started making music when he was 15. He describes himself as a political musician and sees himself in the tradition of the hippie movement and the beat generation. The music of Hugo Race & True Spirit is a mixture of dub , ambient , blues , psychedelic and roots rock as well as influences of Aboriginal music. There are musical similarities to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Leonard Cohen .

Since 2007 he has been working with Chris Eckman and Chris Brokaw under the name Dirtmusic .

In 2011 Race relocated to Australia again and can only be seen occasionally on European tours, as in May 2016 in Vienna.
