Hugo Ries

Friedrich Hugo Ries (born December 7, 1894 in Mainz , † July 18, 1932 there ) was a German football player and one of the pioneers of football in Mainz.

In 1906, as a ten-year-old, Ries joined FC Viktoria Mainz , which had been founded a year earlier and which was merged with Mainz FC Hassia 05 , a direct predecessor of today's 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In 1912 the striker made his debut in the first team of the 05er, in which he made well over 300 appearances by 1926. Only in his military service and in the first post-war season in which he was active at Alemannia Berlin was Ries not in the 05er squad. Ries played eight times in the Mainz district or district selection.

At Christmas 1919 Ries laid the foundation stone for the first heyday of the 05er when he moved back to the Rhine together with several Berlin soccer players (including ex-national player Kurt Diemer and the Freitag brothers ). With 78 goals, the half-left striker Ries had a large share in the Hesse championship of the 05er in 1922.

Meanwhile converted into a defender, Ries ended his active time with the 05ers in 1926, to whom he was still available as a voluntary helper. At the same time, he took over the third-rate Mainz suburb club VfR Weisenau in 1927 as a player-coach. In 1929 Ries rose to the second-class district league with the Weisenauer, in which he only acted as a coach.

In the following years, Ries was an important figure in Mainz youth football. He organized the junior department in both the 05ers and in Weisenau.

On July 18, 1932, Hugo Ries died of pneumonia , a long-term consequence of gas poisoning that he suffered in the trench warfare of the First World War .
