Career

Hugo Väli began his footballing career at the age of 16 with JK Tallinna Kalev , with whom he won the Estonian Championship in 1923. Later he should still be active for the Tallinna Jalgpalliklubi , where he had moved in 1925.

In September 1923 Hugo Väli made his debut in the Estonian national team against the Soviet Union . The following year he participated with the selection of Estonia at the Summer Olympics in Paris. In his sixth international match, Väli, who played in midfield, scored the first and only goal in the national jersey. In the game against Sweden , which took place in Stockholm , he met in the 2-5 defeat to the interim 2-2 equalizer.

The last of a total of 12 international matches, in which he scored a total of 1 goal, he completed in August 1925 against Latvia in Tallinn.

Later years

In 1928 Väli probably ended his football career. From then on he concentrated on his job as an electrician for the Estonian railways . After the Soviet occupation of Estonia in World War II , Väli, like many other Estonians , was deported to the Stalinist gulag system between 1940 and 1941 . He died at the age of 41 in the Sverdlovsk prison camp .
