Hugo Weidel

Hugo Weidel (born November 13, 1849 in Vienna ; † June 7, 1899 there ) was an Austrian chemist.

Life

Hugo Weidel completed his habilitation in 1878 at the Vienna University of Chemistry . In 1886 he was appointed full professor at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences . From 1891 he was a full professor at the University of Vienna.

meaning

Weidel dealt mainly with studies on the oxidation and degradation of alkaloids , nicotinic and berberic acid , phenolic benzene derivatives and animal tar . The Weidel reaction is named after him.

Honors

In 1880 Weidel received the Lieben Prize .

Appreciation

In 1906 a relief with a profile picture of Hugo Weidel by the artist Alfonso Canciani was unveiled in the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna. In 1956, Weidelstrasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him.
