Hugo Wilhelm Arthur Nahl

Hugo Wilhelm Arthur Nahl (* 1833 in Kassel , Germany; † April 1, 1889 in Alameda , California, USA) was a painter , illustrator and graphic artist . He came from the artist family Nahl and was the son of Johann Wilhelm and Henriette Nahl.

Life

Arthur began his studies with his half-brother Charles (then still Carl) Christian, who was 15 years his senior, and continued at the Kassel Art Academy . He accompanied Charles Christian Nahl and his artistic partner Frederick August Wenderoth , who later became Arthur's brother-in-law, on his further emigration and artist path to France (Paris) in 1846 and then to America (Brooklyn, New York) in 1849.

After an economically unsuccessful interlude in the Californian gold rush in 1851, the brothers returned to their artistic skills and opened a studio in Sacramento , where they were able to make good use of their impressions and experiences in prospecting for gold. The great fire of 1852 destroyed most of Sacramento including their studio, which led them to relocate to San Francisco . Hugo Wilhelm Arthur worked with his brother Charles Christian as a commercial artist (commercial artist), painter ( portrait , animals , landscapes and genre representations ), engraver and daguerreotypist . Your company became known in California as "The Nahl Brothers".

The Nahl brothers were outstanding athletes. Your sports hall on the company premises became the nucleus of the Olympic Club and served as its office from 1855 to 1860. In 1865 Arthur Nahl married Annie Sweeney, settled on the other side of the bay in Alameda and lived there for the rest of his life. He died on April 1, 1889, while he was returning home on the ferry.

Works

One of Arthur Nahl's notable successes was the redesign of the California state coat of arms .

The Oakland Museum and the California Historical Society own works by Arthur Nahl.
