Hugo von Besmedin

Hugo von Gibelet or Hugo von Besmedin ( French: Hue or Hugues ; † after 1220) was lord of Besmedin in the county of Tripoli , as well as ruler of Cyprus .

He was the son of Wilhelm Embriaco and his wife Fadie von Hierges. On his father's side he was a grandson of Wilhelm II. Embriaco , Lord of Gibelet.

He was enfeoffed with the Besmedin rule, about 10 km south of Tripoli .

When Emperor Frederick II landed on Cyprus on his crusade in July 1228, he temporarily deposed the local regent John of Ibelin , the "old gentleman of Beirut", and appointed a five-member Regency Council, who in addition to Amalrich Barlais , Amalrich von Bethsan, Gavin von Chenichy, and Wilhelm von Rivet also Hugo von Gibelet belonged.

After the emperor's return to Italy in June 1229, the majority of the Barons Outremers rose against the imperial governors and, led by Johann von Ibelin, removed the Regency Council.

He married Agnes von Ham, daughter of Gerhard von Ham , constable of Tripoli. He had the following children with her:
