Hugolin Martelli , Italian Ugolino Martelli (born September 21, 1519 in Florence , † November 1, 1592 in Vitiana ) was a French clergyman and from 1572 to 1592 Bishop of Glandèves .

Life

Hugolin (Ugolino) Martelli came from an old Florentine merchant and banker family. His uncle, Hugolin Martelli , of the same name , was a well-known writer. He died in 1523 as Bishop of Narni . Hugolin Martelli came to the French court in 1533 in the entourage of Catherine de Medici and received several court offices there. Two of his brothers, Cosmo and Carlo, founded a bank in Lyon . Hugolin received - through the protection of Catherine - on July 18, 1572, the diocese of Glandèves, which had been vacant for several years, which at that time consisted of 56 parishes, about half of which were outside France, in the county of Provence and the county of Nice . The not very rich diocese of Glandèves was strategically important, but very remote and the bishop's palace was largely uninhabitable during the wars of religion; therefore not very attractive for a bishop close to the royal court, so that Martelli - like most bishops of the 16th century - never stayed there - if he ever visited his diocese at all. He therefore stayed mostly in Nice, where he was in close contact with the Governor Honoré Grimaldi .

Hugolin Martelli, like many members of his family, was devoted to the fine arts and very educated. He wrote De anni integra in integrum restitutione, et sacrorum temporum assertio (Florence 1578, Lyon 1582), dedicated to Cardinal Guillaume Sirlet , and La chiave del calendario gregoriano (Florence and Lyon 1583).

Martelli died on November 1, 1592 in Vitiana near Empoli, where he had fled from the Huguenots .
