Hulken on Amrum

The Hulken is a stop-off for the North Frisians on the North Sea island of Amrum . Every New Year's Eve , some people, called Hulken , dress up and go from house to house in small groups in the evenings. Have the residents of the houses guess who is standing in front of them in disguise. As soon as you have guessed the Hulken, you give them candy or a schnapps depending on their age. When leaving the house, you wish for a “Seegent nei juar!”, Amrum Frisian (Öömrang) for “Blessed New Year!” The longer you are on the road, the more fun the matter becomes for the Hulken.

A similar custom is known on the north German mainland and in Jutland as Rummelpottlaufen . On the neighboring island of Föhr in Amrum , the custom is called ütj tu kenknin or Rummelrotje .
