The Humboldt type M.105 were four - axle meter-gauge mallet locomotives that were built by the Humboldt mechanical engineering institute in Cologne for the Bergheimer Kreisbahn (BK) and the Brohltal-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BEG).

history

In 1904 the Bergheimer Kreisbahn got two heavy mallet locomotives, which were given the numbers 10sm and 11sm. Since the Bergheimer Kreisbahn had started to convert its route with a third rail for standard gauge, the demand for meter-gauge vehicles decreased. On the Brohltalbahn, it soon became apparent after commissioning that the locomotives procured for the opening were not efficient enough. In 1905, the Bergheimer Kreisbahn, which also belongs to the parent company West German Railway Company, exchanged the 10sm locomotive for a lighter Mallet locomotive from 1903 and used it under the same number. In 1906 a second locomotive, which was built according to the plans of the 10sm, was newly purchased; it was given the BEG number 11sm. Another locomotive was purchased in 1920, now 12sm. These locomotives were only used on the Brohl – Oberzissen valley line of the Brohl Valley Railway until the rack and pinion operation was discontinued.

When the Bergheimer Kreisbahn was nationalized in 1913, the 11sm of the BK was transferred to the Prussian State Railways as the T 35 Cöln 85 . In 1913 this locomotive was sold to the Badische Lokal-Eisenbahnen (BLEAG) for the Albtalbahn . There it was re-gauged and used under the number 9s. In 1924 it was rented to the Wiesloch – Waldangelloch branch line, which also belongs to BLEAG , and remained there after it was taken over by the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1932. Its whereabouts are unknown.

The 10sm was retired from BEG in 1934.

In addition to the existing narrow-gauge coupler, the remaining locomotives were given a massive buffer beam with two off-center standard-gauge buffers in order to move standard gauge wagons in the Brohl Rhine port. With the acquisition of diesel locomotives in 1965, the steam locomotives became superfluous, the 11sm remained in service as a reserve until 1966.

Constructive features

The locomotive had the same design as Mallet locomotives, the smaller high-pressure cylinders driving the rear engine, the larger low-pressure cylinders the moving front engine. The supplies were housed in long containers on the side of the boiler up to the smoke chamber. There was a steam dome and two sand containers on top of the kettle.

The last 11sm locomotive was bought by DGEG in 1968 and brought to the Viernheim narrow-gauge museum in 1975 . After the museum was closed, the locomotive was brought onto the Brohltalbahn in 1989 by the Brohltalschmalspurbahn (IBS) interest group and acquired in 1998. The processing could begin in 2009; it took place largely at MaLoWa in Klostermansfeld. The locomotive has been operational again since 2015. A new boiler built by Interlok in Piła in 2011 was used. Approx. The refurbishment cost € 750,000.
