Dog whistle

Ultrasonic whistle with adjustable frequency

Dog whistles are aids with which dog handlers give the dog acoustic signals ( audible signals ). All kinds of whistles are used: whistles , shrill whistles , etc. A special whistle, the Galton whistle , was invented by Francis Galton . The frequency range of his dog whistle is largely outside the human hearing range ( listening area ), only the dog hears the tone. Typically frequencies from 16,000 Hz to 22,000 Hz are used. A product on the German market uses frequencies from 5,400 to 12,800 Hz. Most dog whistles are operated by blowing in, similar to whistles. In some models of high-frequency whistles , the frequency of the whistling sound can be adjusted via a thread. The dog is then conditioned to a certain frequency according to the setting.

There are models that work piezoelectrically .

When used correctly, the dog whistle is a tried and tested means of demanding certain desired and trained behavior. Whistles, shrill whistles and Galton whistles can be used individually or in combination. A whistle used for training and guiding hunting dogs can be used from both sides and produces a trill whistle and a single high-pitched tone. Professional and experienced dog trainers prefer the Galton whistle (which is quiet for humans) with signals that resemble Morse code . The prerequisite is always that the dog knows the signals and understands them as a request for certain behavior. This can only be achieved through intensive training (mostly through conditioning , e.g. clicker training ).
