Hundsringbeutler have a head-trunk length of 20 to 23 cm, a tail length of 17 to 20 cm and a weight of 235 to 380 g. Together with the dwarf ring-bagger ( Pseudochirulus mayeri ), they are the smallest ring-bagger species. The species is polymorphic and five subspecies have been described, but they are not recognized in the marsupial volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World , a standard work on mammal studies . Instead, two morphs are mentioned, one with a gray coat and one with a brown coat. In both morphs, a black stripe runs across the middle of the back and the top of the head. In addition, the ear bases are black.

The Hundsringbeutler is widespread, but rare in its entire area of ​​distribution. The animals are found mainly in secondary forests in the New Guinea lowlands, in the Gulf Province and in the Western Province but also up to heights of 1,300 meters. Diet has not yet been studied very intensively. Analyzes of stomach contents revealed leaves, mosses, lichens and ferns. Females with pups in their pouches were examined in October, November and February. Usually they only have a single young animal, in rare cases up to three. Except that they are nocturnal and spend the day in tree caves, among other things, nothing else is known about their behavior.

Danger

The IUCN classifies the Hundsringbeutler in the “ Least Concern ” category . The range is large and the animals are also found in some protected areas.
