action

The five strangers Jordan, Grant, Luke, Anna and Alex wake up in a dark cave. They don't know where they are or how they got into the cave. They are permanently observed by a perverted scientist (The Scientist) via attached video cameras . When they take a closer look at the cave, they discover several barrels with drinking water and a scalpel in a lockable second room. A message is attached to the scalpel itself, according to which a person can survive for about 30 days without food. They are shocked to realize they are trapped in a cannibalism experiment. Now the deeper meaning of the clock installed in the cave opens up to them, divided into 30 sections.

At the beginning the prisoners try to find a way out together. Grant spends the first few days trying to find a way out by looking for weak spots in the wall. He is supported by the doctor Jordan. The two become friends. In parallel, the other three prisoners, the choleric Luke, the scheming Anna and the unstable Alex, form a second group.

After several days without food, the mood changes noticeably, tone and handling become rougher. In particular, Grant is targeted by the second group when it is discovered that he suffers from a heart defect . Only the ongoing excavation attempts still offer hope. When the cave wall can finally be broken, however, this hope is shattered. There is no escape route behind the wall, but the remains of previous victims. The situation escalates. Jordan and Grant are attacked by the others. While Jordan loses consciousness, Grant tries to fight back in a panic. Eventually, however, he is overwhelmed. When Jordan wakes up again, she is tied up. Grant is dead and is already partially eaten by the others.

Luke and Anna begin a sexual relationship that is watched by Alex and increases his instability and paranoia. Alex finally loses his nerve, is killed by Luke and Anna and also eaten. Jordan is able to free himself from her bonds, injure Luke in the eye with the scalpel and barricade in the lockable drinking water room.

Meanwhile, on the 30th day of captivity, Luke and Anna happily await their release. However, even after the clock has run out, no gate to freedom opens. The Scientist never intended to give his prisoners freedom.

Anna then asks Jordan for help by pretending to be afraid of Luke. Jordan should open the door and use it to give Anna safe shelter. Jordan's question as to whether Anna was alone answered in the affirmative. A look under the cracks in the door reveals to Jordan, however, that Luke is actually also at the door. Aware of the trap set, she says goodbye to Anna and leaves the door locked.

Luke and Anna are nervous. In the fight Anna is strangled by Luke. Jordan, who overheard the fight and left her room, can overpower and kill Luke in the course of it. As the last survivor, she collapses, exhausted. The Scientist saw everything and is now awaiting Jordan's death. In spite of everything, his experiment does not seem to have been successful for him, since Jordan is close to death but did not eat human flesh. After Jordan has not moved for a long time, The Scientist assumes that she has passed away. He goes to the cave to his victims, but is attacked, overwhelmed and killed by Jordan in a moment of surprise. Jordan can finally free himself from the cave.

The scientist's motive lies in his own childhood. He and his mother had a car accident many years ago. After days of starvation, the boy ate his dead mother's meat. When the accident vehicle was finally discovered, the boy had already eaten an arm, which left him severely traumatized. In order to justify and excuse his actions to himself, he kept putting people in hopeless situations until they themselves became cannibals.

reception

Reviews

“A popular modern genre motif is effectively varied when, in this gloomy, claustrophobic horror nightmare, a thrown together group of suspected death row inmates must pass sadistic tests in front of surveillance electronics. In contrast to “Saw” and its kind, the detailed mutilations are not exaggerated, the psychological motif is clearly in the foreground from the beginning in total darkness to the successful final punch. Convincingly played, atmospherically staged, tip for fans. "

Gross profit

With a budget of US $ 625,000 , the film grossed US $ 4.5 million worldwide.
