history

Asia's first known cyclotron was located in Hangnam during the early 1940s . It was designed as part of the unsuccessful Japanese nuclear weapons program. After the capitulation of Japan in 1945, the Soviet military took over the particle accelerator .

As a result of the battle for the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War , the communist units succeeded in throwing back the UN troops in December 1950, with heavy losses ; these withdrew to the bridgehead of Hangnam. One of the largest evacuations of UN forces and North Korean civilians during the Korean War took place over the city's port. About 100,000 soldiers and material as well as 100,000 civilians were loaded onto numerous merchant ships and military transports over several weeks up to Christmas 1950, and transported to Busan and other destinations in South Korea for safety .

In 2005, the city of Hŭngnam (Hŭngnam-si) became part of the city of Hamhŭng as Hŭngnam-kuyŏk.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the city there are aluminum processing, mechanical engineering, textile and chemical industries. The Vinalon plant “8. February “ is one of the bigger companies. Hŭngnam is the site of a large fertilizer complex that is said to have been used to make chemical weapons. Around Hŭngnam there are a number of coal mines and also a nuclear power plant.

The city is the seat of the Hungnam Chemical Engineering College and is home to several technical schools and libraries.
