Hus Forbi is an independent, national Danish newspaper published by the homeless in collaboration with professional freelance journalists and photographers . It was first published on August 28, 1996; The occasion was the choice of the capital Copenhagen as the European City of Culture . Hus Forbi serves to promote the debate about the homeless and their social exclusion, which is usually not discussed in the media . Everyday topics are printed, but also political information and stories of the homeless. Hus Forbi is published twelve times a year, has a circulation of 85,000–90,000 copies per month and 500,000 readers. The newspaper is a member of the international network of INSP street papers .
According to the editors of Hus Forbi, the newspaper serves a dual purpose: to promote the debate of the homeless and their social exclusion, which is usually not discussed in the media. Everyday topics are printed, but also political information and stories of the homeless. The newspaper also gives homeless people an opportunity to earn their own money and get back on their feet. For many, it is a worthy alternative to begging or crime because it is here that they are making money legally by selling a product - the newspaper. According to a survey conducted by Hus Forbi in 2007, the homeless have more money at their disposal thanks to the sale, they are happier because they have more contact with other people and have more control over their own lives. One in three says abuse has decreased, and nearly a quarter say their health has generally improved. Only five percent of salespeople believe homeless abuse has increased because of the sale.
Hus Forbi costs 20 kroner in street sales. There is an option to subscribe to the newspaper. The seller earns 10 kroner per newspaper. The 12 crowns are divided into 8 crowns, which are intended for production, administration and sales, and 2 crowns for VAT. Hus Forbi employs around 1800 registered dealers. Most are in the metropolitan area and Zealand, but there are also suppliers in the big cities like Aarhus, Aalborg, Randers, Esbjerg and Odense. Some are homeless, others are ex-homeless - these are all socially vulnerable people. It is not allowed to beg while the newspaper is being sold; if a customer does not want the newspaper, it should not be forced on either.
