Hutton Castle is a crenellated country house above Whiteadder Water , about 2.5 km southeast of Chirnside and 11 km west of Berwick-upon-Tweed in the Scottish county of Berwickshire (now the administrative division of Scottish Borders ). It is also called Hatton Hall or Hutton Hall .

history

The land originally belonged to Clan Home from Wedderburn Castle . The villa was probably built in the 16th century, but could contain much older parts of the building. From 1876 the country house belonged to Dudley Marjoribanks, 1st Baron Tweedmouth . At the end of the 19th century it was partially derelict.

Sir William Burrell

In 1916 Sir William Burrell , a wealthy Glasgow shipowner and art collector , bought Hutton Castle. Burrell hired Robert Lorimer to draw up plans to restore and expand the house, but the two men could not agree on a proposal. In 1926 a north wing was added according to plans by the architect Reginald Fairlie . In the following year Burrell was able to move in and lived at Hutton Castle with his art collection until his death in 1958.

Burrell bequeathed his collection to the Glasgow Corporation in 1944 , stating that u. a. some rooms of Hutton Castle should be redesigned for the exhibition of the artworks. In 1983, when the current Burrell Collection building in Pollok Park , Glasgow was completed, copies of the dining room, drawing room and entrance hall of Hutton Castle were installed there.

Later story

In the meantime Hutton Castle remained uninhabited. At the end of the 1990s, the country house was rebuilt as a residential building. Historic Scotland has listed Hutton Castle as a Category B Historic Building.
