Burrell Collection
The Burrell Collection is an originally private art collection with over 8,500 exhibits that was donated to his hometown Glasgow in 1944 by the Scottish entrepreneur Sir William Burrell . The collection includes tapestries, glass, ceramics, sculptures and paintings from Europe and Far Eastern countries.
A dedicated museum was built for the Burrell Collection and inaugurated in 1983. It is located in Pollock Country Park , a few miles south of Glasgow city center. In the same park, just a 10-minute walk away, there is another high-quality art collection with paintings by Spanish masters ( Goya , El Greco , Murillo ), the Pollock House .
Art collection
The exhibits in the painting collection include works of the Renaissance such as a depiction of the Virgin and Child and two angels making music by Alberto Piazza da Lodi and a Virgin and Child by Giovanni Bellini . There are also the paintings Ecce Homo of the Northern Dutch School, The Annunciation by Marcellus Coffermans , a Judith with the Head of Holofernes by Lucas Cranach the Elder, as well as an Angel of the Annunciation and a Judgment of the Paris of the French School at the end of the 15th century. In the field of Dutch baroque painting, there is a self-portrait of the young Rembrandt van Rijn , the interior of the Oude Kerk in Delft by Hendrick Cornelisz. van Vliet and a Still Life with Candle and Letters by Evert Collier . There is also the portrait of a woman Antonina Willoughby by the Irish-English painter Nathaniel Hone . Scottish painting is represented by the Portrait of a Lady in White by William Denune and a group of works by Henry Raeburn . These include the portraits of William Frobes of Pitsligo , Colonel Bowes , Miss Macartney and Henry MacKenzie .

The collection is particularly extensive with paintings from the 19th century. These include works from the Hague School, such as the two pictures Scheveningen and Fuhrwerk am Strand by Anton Mauve , created on the North Sea . There are also numerous works by the Maris brothers . For example, there is a still life of the dead bird by Willem Maris and a landscape of ducks populated with water birds . The collection includes Jacob Maris' two children's portraits, Girl with Goat and Girl with Peacock Feathers , the landscapes Cloudy Sky and Boats on the Beach, and the standing views of Dordrecht , Memory of Dordrecht and Amsterdam . From Matthijs Maris there is the religious picture The Virgin of Shalott , the genre motif The Prisoners , the cityscape of Montmartre , the landscape picture The Pond and a still life of roses . There are also the depictions of girls Child with Lemon , Girl with auburn hair , Reading Girl , Butterflies , The Dreamer , The Beauty , Dark Beauty and The Sisters .
19th century French painting is represented by a large number of works in the Burrell Collection. There are paintings by Théodore Géricault , Dancing White Horse and The Guard Trumpeter , by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot the works Portrait of a Woman , Fontainebleau Farmhouse and Ships and by Jean-François Millet the paintings Woman putting on stockings and shepherdess . The Burrell Collection has small groups of works by several painters. The collection also includes paintings by 19th century British artists. These include works by Scottish painters such as Spring Dance by Edward Atkinson Hornel , a Landscape by Grosvenor Thomas , the Japanese Lady with a Fan by George Henry and the Portrait of The Girl in White , the Still Life Coffee and Liqueur and Two Bouquets of Roses by Samuel Peploe . There are also the paintings Landscape with Clouds and Don Saltero's Walk by the English artist Cecil Gordon Lawson and the portrait of Miss Mary Burrell by John Lavery .
