Hval Codex
The Hval Codex is an illuminated manuscript in Church Slavonic , which was probably made in Split in 1404 . It contains the New Testament text , the Psalms and some non-biblical texts. The manuscript consists of 353 sheets of parchment , which are written in Cyrillic script in the Itavian ( Bosnian ) dialect. It contains 380 initials and 96 miniatures and illuminations in the Dalmatian Gothic style . The illustrations show biblical scenes. They were apparently designed by two artists whose style is different. The representations of one are on a blue background, those of the other on a gold background with many architectural elements.
The manuscript was made by the Christian (krstjanin) Hval, who is attached to the Bosnian Church, for Prince Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić of Split, as a note in the colophon notes. It is now in the University Library in Bologna .
