Missale glagoliticum Hervoiae ducis Spalatensis
The Missale glagoliticum Hervoiae ducis Spalatensis ( Latin for Glagolitic Missal of Duke Hrvoje of Split ) is an illustrated manuscript in Croatian Church Slavonic and Glagolitic script . It is considered the most beautiful and splendid Croatian illuminated manuscript of the Middle Ages .
description
The manuscript contains the Catholic missal on 247 sheets of parchment in the format 30.2 × 22.5 cm, plus 96 colored miniatures and 380 initials . The art style suggests that the paintings were done by local artists under the influence of contemporary Italian art styles.
The missal was handwritten around 1404 by the priest Butko in Split for the Ban of Croatia Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić . It came to Budim ( Hungary ) and came into the possession of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople as spoils of war .
The missal is now in the library of the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul .
