Hwang In-suk (born December 21, 1958 in Seoul ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Hwang In-suk was born in Seoul in 1958 and studied creative writing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.

Hwang In-suk made her debut in 1984 at a Kyunghyang Ilbo New Year's literary competition , where she won a prize for her poem I'm Born a Cat (나는 고양이 로 태어나 리라). Hwang is very interested in the "stray cats" of society, the lonely and isolated livelihoods of the city. In an interview, she stated that she likes to secretly set up water and food for stray cats in her neighborhood and that she enjoys it when she finds the bowls empty a short time later. In her inner circle of colleagues she is called the “poet with the 4 things that she has and that she does not have”. What she doesn't have is a house, money, husband and children, and what she has is poetry, friends, helpfulness and a selfless, non-material character.

Elements such as poor, lonely existences and comforting words for this, detailed description of surroundings and loneliness are essential contents of Hwang In-suk's poems. She believes loneliness is a kind of disease that can affect anyone. Hope is a way of healing and can always be found somehow. The poet sees hope in the form of a poetic method in the beauty of language.
