Hyalotheca is a species from the green algae group of ornamental algae (Desmidiales) that occursin freshwater. It consists of a few types.

features

The representatives form unbranched threads from a row of cells. The threads are 9 to 39 micrometers in diameter. The cells are short, cylindrical and hardly constricted at the edge, a peculiarity among the Desmidiales. The threads are embedded in a common jelly that is quite noticeable. They have a central nucleus , the star-shaped chloroplast is axially and carries a pyrenoid in each cell half . The growth occurs through cell division inside the thread.

The asexual reproduction is carried out by breaking the thread or by conversion of yarn thick-walled cells in aplanospores. The sexual reproduction is done by the zygnematophyceae characteristic conjugation .

Occurrence

The representatives of the genus occur quite frequently in nutrient-poor bog ponds, in gullies and ditches of Sphagnum bogs.
