Hyde Park - Kenwood Historic District is the name of a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listed building ensemble on the South Side of Chicago in Illinois , United States , which includes parts of the Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods . The northern part of the Historic District overlaps with the earlier than Chicago Landmark designated Kenwood District . This is where Barack Obama's Chicago home is located .

The historic district was added to the NRHP on February 14, 1979. Slight expansion took place twice, on August 16, 1984 and May 16, 1986. The District is roughly bounded by 47th Street, 59th Street, Lake Park Avenue and Cottage Groves Avenue. Although a large part of the contributing properties therein belong to the University of Chicago , the Hyde Park - Kenwood Historic District is largely a residential area. Its historical importance is based on architecture and its connection with education.

Among the major structures within the district there are numerous properties registered independently in the National Register, including the Frank R. Lillie House , the Isidore H. Heller House , Amos Jerome Snell Hall and Charles Hitchcock Hall , the Arthur H. Compton House , the Chicago Pile-1 reactor , St. Thomas Church and Convent , the Frederick C. Robie House , the George Herbert Jones Laboratory, and the Robert A. Millikan House . They are all in Hide Park, none of the properties included in the Kenwood NRHP are within the boundaries of Hyde Park - Kenwood Historic District. The University Apartments are also within the district boundaries. Chicago Pile-1 and Robie House are also two of the four structures that were included in the NRHP on October 15, 1966.
