The Hyde Park building on Fürstenauer Weg

Hyde Park is the name of a music club in Osnabrück . Opened in 1976 in a former excursion restaurant on Rheiner Landstrasse, the current location is located after three moves in an industrial area on Fürstenauer Weg.

The beginnings

In 1976 Conny Overbeck, then 24 years old, leased the “Schweizerhaus” restaurant, built in 1907, to turn it into a “progressive music store”. With the concert of the Hungarian rock group "Omega", "Hyde Park" opened its doors on June 18, 1976. The discotheque became a popular meeting point for so-called “non-conforming young people” from a wide variety of directions in the entire north-west of Germany. For many adults, however, “Hyde Park” had the reputation of a “drug den”. Protests from residents quickly formed due to the considerable noise pollution, especially from the approaching and departing traffic. With this justification, the city administration wanted to close the discotheque. After many years of legal disputes, a settlement was reached to close “Hyde Park” on Rheiner Landstrasse on July 31, 1983 and to reopen it at a suitable location.

The "Hyde Park Riots"

No alternative location was found by the agreed date. This fact, in connection with the hope, fueled by press reports, that the operation of the "park" would be tacitly tolerated by the city of Osnabrück, led to frustration among many regular guests. In contrast to the closure of the “Scala” ( Jaguar Club ) in Herford in 1981, riots broke out in Osnabrück in 1983. After the closing event of “Hyde Park” on July 31st had ended at midnight, the disappointment of numerous guests erupted in a street battle with the police, which even led to the storming of “Hyde Park” Use of tear gas grenades came. The "Bild" newspaper had the headline at the time: "Osnabrück: 1000 punks - bloody battle". The Tagesschau also reported. In the following days there were isolated further clashes between hundreds of the police, who had been summoned from different parts of Lower Saxony, and numerous young people.

The different locations of the "Hyde Park"

After a few transitional events in the Gartlage hall , a circus tent was erected as a temporary measure in the original Esch camp on Fürstenauer Weg. As at the previous location, many international rock and pop groups made stops here. Due to the poor noise insulation, there were also residents protests here. Since no suitable existing object could be found, a wooden structure was built at the same place, which was modeled on the shape of a circus tent. In 2000, the lease with the city was not extended, so that "Hyde Park" had to move again, now a few meters further in an octagonal steel structure on the opposite side of the street. At this location, which was opened on November 30th, 2000, disco and concert operations continue to this day.
