Jaguar Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jaguar Club in Herford was one of the most famous beat clubs in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region from 1966 to 1970 .

history

Beginnings

The history of the Jaguar Club is closely linked to the name Carola Frauli. After their school days, their sons Axel and Harald founded a beat band with friends, the Jaguars. After appearing in different places, they looked for a room in Herford where they could also perform. At the beginning of 1964 the Jaguars began to organize concert afternoons in the Herford Schützenhof. At the end of the year there were additional groups. In January 1965 the name Jaguar Club was used for the first time.

Highlights

When the Jaguars band broke up and the lease in the Schützenhof was terminated, the Jaguar Club was opened on January 20, 1966 in the former Scala cinema at Mindener Straße 38.

As in the earlier cinema, the audience seats were arranged in steps to the rear. There were no rows of chairs, but tables.

The place of the Jaguars was taken by the Herford band "Rags".

In the next five years almost all known bands and singers of the time who were on tour in Germany performed there. Many came to Herford following their appearance on the Bremen television program Beat Club . The Jaguar Club was one of the best addresses in the country after the Hamburg Star Club .

The entrance fees were extremely low by today's standards. They ranged from 1.50 DM to 6.50 DM for Cream, 8.00 DM for Jimi Hendrix, who appeared in the Jaguar Club in 1967, and 12.00 DM for The Who. In part, the entrance fee was also offset against the drinks consumed.

While the already announced Bee Gees could not appear due to labor law problems, the Rolling Stones were unloaded again because they had previously dismantled the Berlin Waldbühne. Cliff Richard was unable to come because of an overlap.

The end

From 1969 discotheque events were held in the Jaguar Club in addition to live concerts. On October 30, 1970, a few months after the Hamburg Star Club was closed, the last guest performance with the German Bonds took place in the Jaguar Club. From 1978 to 1981, the premises under the name Scala Herford served as a venue for punk , reggae and new wave concerts. In January 1982 the Scala building was demolished.
