The green hydra ( Hydra viridissima , Syn . : Chlorohydra viridissima ) is a freshwater polyp species .

description

The green hydra is 10 to 15 millimeters long and light green thanks to the single-cell algae ( zoochlorella ) that live symbiotic in the cells of their gastrodermis . It has six to twelve tentacles around the mouth that are shorter than the body. The green hydra can survive longer periods of hunger because it is supplied with sugar by the symbiotic algae. The body is cylindrical and slightly wider at the mouth than at the foot.

habitat

The green hydra lives in standing, clear, somewhat shady and cool waters with fresh water, e.g. B. Forest ponds. Here it lives sessile on aquatic plants, e.g. B. scroll under water lilies .
