Floating leaves of Hydrocharis dubia

Hydrocharis is a genus of plants in the frog-bite family(Hydrocharitaceae).

features

Hydrocharis species are perennial, herbaceous plants. They are floating plants or have roots in shallow water. The stems are short and form runners. The leaves are arranged in a basal rosette, stalked, floating or submerged, rarely protruding from the water surface. The leaf blade is ovate, rounded or kidney-shaped, with entire margins, with a blunt to slightly pointed end. The 1 or 2 leaf spines are transparent and dry-skinned. More than 5 of the leaf veins are curved.

The plants are monoecious and the flowers are radial and unisexual. The spathe are one or two-sided. The male spatas are one to six-flowered and stalked. Male flowers have a short stalk. The 3 sepals are oblong-elliptical, blunt, white or greenish white and persistent. The 3 petals are broadly ovate, white or yellowish, with a rounded tip, membranous and much longer and wider than the sepals. The number of stamens is 5 to 12 or 9 to 12, depending on the source. The anthers are fixed dorsally and have 2 counters.

The female spatas are single-flowered and sessile. The female flowers have long stalks and protrude slightly from the spathe. Sepals and petals correspond to those of the male flowers. The ovary is elliptical. The 6 styluses are free, flat and short with two lobes or two columns.

There are numerous ovules. The fruits are elliptical to spherical, six-ribbed, fake six-chambered, many-seeded, pulpy, berry-like and the columns at the top are irregular. The seeds are ellipsoidal and their seed coat is pulpy.

Occurrence

Hydrocharis occurs in tropical Africa, Asia and Europe and is naturalized in temperate Australia and North America.

Systematics

The genus Hydrocharis was first described by Linnaeus in 1753. It consists of three types:

  • Hydrocharis chevalieri (De Wild.) Dandy ; it occurs from Benin to tropical Central Africa.
  • Hydrocharis dubia (flower) backer ; it occurs from tropical Asia to East Asia and is naturalized in northern Australia.
  • Hydrocharis morsus-ranae L .; it occurs from Europe to western Siberia and the Caucasus and in northwest Africa.
