Hydrocharis dubia is a species of the Hydrocharis genus. The aquatic plant is widespread from China through South and East Asia to northern Australia.

The leaves of Hydrocharis dubia are floating, sometimes submerged. The leaf blade is 4.5 - 5 × 5 - 5.5 centimeters in size, heart-shaped or circular and 5- to 7-veined. The leaf base is heart-shaped, the tip rounded. There are five or six male flowers in a spathe . The inflorescence axis is 0.5 to 3.5 inches long, the flower stalks 5 to 6.5 inches. The sepals measure approximately 6 × 3 millimeters. The petals are about 1.3 × 1.7 centimeters and yellow. There are 12 stamens , of which the three inner ones are transformed into staminodes . The anthers measure 1 to 1.5 millimeters. The staminodes are hairy at the base and covered with papillae at the top . Female flowers are larger than males. The sepals are approximately 1.1 centimeters by 4 millimeters. The petals are white, only their base is yellow. They are approximately 1.5 × 1.8 centimeters in size. There are 6 staminodes and 3 kidney-shaped glands. The styles are about 4 millimeters long and densely covered with glandular hair. The fruits are similar to berries . They are 8 to 10 millimeters long, have a diameter of approximately 7 millimeters and are spherical to ovoid. The seeds are pointed.

The species blooms and produces fruit from August to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The habitat of Hydrocharis dubia is standing water. The species originally comes from China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Northeast Hainan, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Jilin, Liaoning, Shaanxi, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan and Zhejiang provinces) via Taiwan , Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Japan with the Ryukyu Islands, Korea, Myanmar, New Guinea, Philippines, Thailand and up to Vietnam.

Systematics

Hydrocharis dubia was first described in 1827 by Carl Ludwig von Blume under the name Pontederia dubia . Cornelis Andries Backer placed the species in the genus Hydrocharis in 1925 .
