features

These are small, two to 4.3 millimeters long, water-dwelling beetles that are elongated ( narrow water beetles ) and brown to black in color, sometimes with a metallic sheen. The spherical protruding eyes distinguish them from other water beetle species. Your middle and hind leg pairs are provided with only moderately trained swimming bristles. Like some other aquatic beetle species, they have stridulation organs .

Occurrence

Narrowwater beetles live in vegetation-rich, preferably stagnant bodies of water, and do not move particularly quickly there.

Systematics

The narrowwater beetle family is represented in Europe with around 285 species and is divided into four subfamilies with a total of 29 genera . The European genus Hydrochus was formerly part of the family long-sea beetles (Hydraenidae), but is now considered an independent family. Seven species are known in Central Europe and Germany.

The following list gives an overview of the genera represented in Europe.
