The hydrographic measuring station Spiekeroog is a hydrographic measuring station of the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Sea (ICBM) of the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg and is located in the Wadden Sea of the North Sea directly in front of the southwest end of the island Spiekeroog . The measuring station was set up in the Schillbalje (at the southern end of the Otzumer Balje ) in a water depth of 13 meters in 2002 and is the first of a series of planned measuring stations in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park . In 2012, the University of Oldenburg was awarded the North German Science Prize for the studies that were largely carried out here.

Measurements

Observing the environment and obtaining reliable and continuous data through measurements is more difficult at sea than on land. Measurements by satellite or from ships are either very expensive and cannot be carried out in all weather conditions. The measurement results from the measuring station are transmitted by radio to the receiving station on Spiekeroog in all weathers, and from there by phone to the University of Oldenburg.

In addition to hydrographic measurements of inflowing and outflowing water between the rear mudflats and the open North Sea (physical, chemical and biological properties), meteorological measurements such as air pressure , temperature , wind and humidity are also recorded.

Structural execution

The measuring station consists of a steel tube with a diameter of around 1½ meters, a total of 35 meters long and anchored ten meters deep in the sea bed. When the water floods, the system protrudes seven meters above the water surface.

The inside of the tube can be walked to the bottom of the sea; inside there are five thin measuring tubes that are aligned in the direction of the tidal current. The pipe carries two platforms on which there are containers for energy and data technology as well as solar cells and a wind turbine. Outside there is a jetty and a ladder.

The station is operational all year round and is ice-proof up to an ice thickness of 50 centimeters.
