Hygge. A way of life that simply makes you happy is a book by Meik Wiking. It was first published in 2016.

content

The book describes the Danish national feeling of hygge in more detail. Hygge is essential for the Danes' sense of happiness , which has developed in a Scandinavian country with long winters. Wiking goes into the meaning of candles in everyday Danish life. The furniture design, especially that of the lamp , in which numerous Danes like Poul Henningsen have distinguished themselves, ultimately has the purpose of producing a warm, pleasant light . Hygge can be translated as Dutch Gezelligheid or German Gemütlichkeit , but has typical individual aspects that are foreign to the other languages. Wiking begins with an etymological introduction and concludes that the word Hygge from the Norwegian has been borrowed, then the book goes into a description and finally into a guide through which the reader to acquire one as hyggelig advises perceived lifestyle.

criticism

“Perhaps the Danes' phenomenon of happiness has more to do with the cold, long winters, when people prefer to retreat to the warm inside from the gloom. It is possible that the Danes can simply afford hygge because they live in a comfortable social system in which education, health costs and pensions are largely secured. The consumption of antidepressants and beer also has peak values. And when it comes to baking hashish biscuits, it's not just the hippie commune Christiania in Copenhagen who are at the forefront. "
