Hymn of Death is a mini-series by the South Korean television station SBS , which was released internationally through the streaming service Netflix . The film is set at the time of the Japanese occupied Korea and is about the soprano Yun Sim-deok and the writer Kim U-jin. The story has already been adapted several times before.

action

In the early 1920s, when Korea was already occupied by Japan, a few, mostly Korean, students founded an artist group for literature, music and theater in the Japanese capital Tokyo . They want to tour Korea (Chōsen / Joseon) together to perform their play. This is supposed to be performed in Korean and has already been censored in order not to come into conflict with Japanese authorities. But they want to show that Korea lives, even if it is now a colony. They also want to spread western and new works in Korea.

While working on and rehearsing the play, Sim-deok and U-jin, the director, get closer and closer. But one day the Japanese police raid because they fear socialist ideas or the planning of an uprising. However, you can't find anything suspicious. The group decides to move on despite the danger. After a while, their performances take place in Korea. But after the last appearance, U-jin is arrested and mistreated by the police. You want to make an example because the play was about freedom. When he is released from prison, he is met by Sim-deok. She initially takes him to her parents' house. They spend some time together in Gyeongseong and also visit the Dansungsa Theater . Sim-deok dreams of becoming the best singer in Korea and performing there.

Before everyone returns to Japan, U-jin invites his group to Mokpo. Sim-deok is surprised that U-jin's family is so wealthy and shocked to see that U-jin is already married. She then leaves the graduation ceremony early and leaves her message and hat. A month later, U-jin and Sim-deok meet again in Tokyo. But Sim-deok is returning to Korea because her studies have finished.

Five years later, U-jin took over his father's company. One morning he reads in the newspaper that Yun Sim-deok will be performing at Dansungsa. He decides to go to Gyeongseong and see the performance. Sim-deok recognizes him in the audience and runs after him after the performance. Both still love each other and meet more often. U-jin starts to write again. But Sim-deok has money problems despite her work as a singer of western classical music. She is supposed to marry a rich man but is reluctant because she is in love with U-jin. She travels to Mokpo and asks him for help. But he cannot offer her to stay with him. So Sim-deok marries the man. Meanwhile, U-jin's father has learned about his trips to Gyeongseong and his paperwork. But U-jin defends himself for the first time, because otherwise he would have done everything his father ever wanted: the marriage and the takeover of the company. He doesn't want to give up writing again.

Sim-deok finally receives an offer from a Japanese record company that would allow her to finance one of her siblings' studies in the USA. She demands double the wages to support both siblings and breaks off the engagement. In Mokpo, U-jin's wife and father came across the books and love letters and burned them. But U-jin has decided that he wants to live with Sim-deok and leaves his company and his family. Sim-deok and U-jin want to go to Osaka together , where the sound recording will also take place. U-jin leaves earlier and waits for Sim-deok in Osaka. Meanwhile, in Gyeongseong, rumors are spreading that Sim-deok had slept with the president of the record company for money and that her fiancé called off the wedding. The rumors are bothering her. In addition, the Japanese government in Korea wants her to sing for them at events. Otherwise something would happen to her family. However, she does not accept. However, she knows that if she returns from Osaka, she will be forced to do so.

In Osaka, U-jin is visited by his wife, who tells him that his father no longer eats and that no one else can run the company. Shortly afterwards, Sim-deok and U-jin meet again. Both consider their situation to be hopeless. On the ferry back to Korea they ask for one last dance before they jump to their deaths together.
