Dorsal view

Hypera venusta , also known as the southern coconut weevil , is a beetle in the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The beetles are 2.9-3.7 mm long. They are covered with light-colored scales, these can turn out whitish-gray, greenish or brownish. A short scutellar spot is usually indicated at the base of the wing covers . The third space is darkened at the base. The wing cover seam is darkened in spots up to half its length. The fourth to sixth spaces form a dark, scaled longitudinal wipe behind the center. This tapers towards the front. Grid spots are missing or are only blurred.

distribution

The species is widespread in the Mediterranean area, where it is also found in North Africa and the Middle East . The occurrence extends north over Central Europe to southern Scandinavia and the British Isles . In Central Europe, the species occurs mainly in warm areas. The occurrence decreases noticeably towards the north.

Way of life

The beetle species uses various representatives of the legume (Fabaceae) as host plants . These include in particular the common wound clover ( Anthyllis vulneraria ), the seed sasparsette ( Onobrychis viciifolia ), the common horn clover ( Lotus corniculatus ), the thread clover ( Trifolium dubium ) and vetches ( Vicia ). The larvae develop freely on the host plants and feed on their leaves. To pupate , the larvae make a transparent, grid-like cocoon that is attached to the leaves or to the stem of the forage plant. The adults appear from April.
