The hyperkeratosis of the pads (also digital hyperkeratosis ; digital lat .: concerning the pads / fingers) is an excessive cornification ( hyperkeratosis ), in which long horn tips develop on the pads of all four paws of dogs . The disease is presumably hereditary and has been observed more frequently in some breeds of Bordeaux mastiffs , Golden Retrievers , Labrador Retrievers , Kerry Blue Terriers , Bedlington Terriers and Irish Terriers ; isolated cases can also occur in other dog breeds . The cornification disorder shows up from the age of six months. The diagnosis can be confirmed histologically .

No specific therapy is known. A 50% propylene glycol solution can be applied locally for symptoms . The elasticity of the ball can be maintained by regular mechanical removal of the horn tips.

Hereditary hyperkeratosis should not be confused with hard pad disease , a complication of the viral infectious disease distemper, which has become rare in Europe thanks to vaccination . Other diseases that can lead to hyperkeratosis are vitamin A-reactive dermatosis , zinc-reactive dermatosis , hepatocutaneous syndrome , leishmaniasis , pemphigus foliaceus and lupus erythematosus .
