Hyphessobrycon bentosi is a small tetra species that is widespreadin the Amazon basin . The terra typica of the species is located near Igarapé Curuçamba 8 km from Óbidos in the Brazilian state of Pará .

features

Hyphessobrycon bentosi reaches a length of about 4.5 cm and has a moderately high, laterally strongly flattened body, which is 2.67 to 3.17 (⌀ 2.85) as long as it is high, with the back line being more curved than that Belly line. The greatest body height is just before the beginning of the dorsal fin. Due to the olive-brown basic color, the species can be distinguished from the reddish-colored species Hyphessobrycon jackrobertsi . Hyphessobrycon bentosi can be distinguished from Hyphessobrycon rosaceus by the lack of white coloration of the first rays and tips of the anal fin and pelvic fins. The height of the dorsal and anal fin of the males and females are similar in Hyphessobrycon bentosi , while the males of H. jackrobertsi and Hyphessobrycon paepkei have significantly higher unpaired fins and thus a pronounced sexual dimorphism is present. The caudal fin is deeply forked. An adipose fin is present. When laid back, the dorsal fin does not reach the adipose fin. The maxillary of Hyphessobrycon bentosi has 3 to 8 teeth, with the number of teeth increasing with age.

Systematics and taxonomy

Hyphessobrycon bentosi was first described scientifically in 1908 by the American ichthyologist Marion Durbin Ellis (1887–1972). From the beginning the species was assigned to the genus Hyphessobrycon , which differs from Hemigrammus only in the unscaled caudal fin base . Within the genus Hyphessobrycon , H. bentosi belongs to the Rosy tetra species group . In specialist aquarium literature, Hyphessobrycon bentosi has been constantly confused with other species from the Rosy Tetra species group, particularly often with Hyphessobrycon rosaceus and Hyphessobrycon jackrobertsi (known as Hyphessobrycon 'robertsi' between 1958 and 2014 ). H. rosaceus was listed as a subspecies of H. bentosi for a while. To end the confusion, Axel Zarske, then head of the ichthyology section of the Senckenberg Natural History Collections in Dresden , published a new description of Hyphessobrycon bentosi and an initial description of Hyphessobrycon 'robertsi' under the name Hyphessobrycon jackrobertsi in 2014 . The well-known from the hunting hyphessobrycon bentosi which in most aquarium reference books as bentosi H. is called, identified here as Zarske H. rosaceus .
