features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is on average 80 to 90 millimeters. However, individual females can also reach a wingspan of 110 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism . In both sexes, the basic wing color is black to dark red-brown. The apex is very pointed and curved. On the upper side of the forewing , a wide white band runs through the diskal region . In the submarginal region , a few small white spots stand out on both pairs of wings. The undersides of the wings show a dark brown to purple-brown marbling, which is interrupted by some silver-white spots and bands. In English usage, the species is referred to as marbled leafwing (marbled leaf wing), silver-studded leafwing (silvery fogged leaf wing) or jazzy leafwing (striking leaf wing). At the anal angle there are two pairs of tails of different lengths, with the longer ending bluntly.

Pre-imaginal stages

Adult caterpillars are marbled brown and have short tubercles from which some thorns extend. The doll is designed as a tumble doll, has a grass-green color and a distinct, pointed thickening on the abdomen.

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

The distribution area of Hypna clytemnestra stretches from Mexico in a southerly direction through Central and South America to the north of Argentina . The species is also found on the Caribbean islands . Eight subspecies are currently listed in the individual occurrence areas . The species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests at altitudes between 100 and 800 meters.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations throughout the year. Usually, the moths are rarely seen, as they like to stay in the treetops. Occasionally, however, there are explosive reproductions and the moths can even be found in urban areas. They like to visit damp places in the earth, injured tree trunks or rotting fruit in order to absorb fluids and minerals. On the other hand, flowers are not sought. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the Croton species , which belong to the milkweed family (Euphorbiaceae) , in particular Croton floribundus . During the feeding breaks, they hide in a folded sheet that is spun with silk.
