Hypnum bambergeri ( Bamberger's sleep moss ) is a pleurocarpes leaf moss from the Hypnaceae family .

features

Hypnum bambergeri usually forms dense, cushion-shaped, yellow-green to golden-brown, inside light rust-colored lawns. The stems are up to 10 centimeters long, are irregularly branched and not rhizoid-tomentose. The trunk cross-section has a thin central strand. The leaves, arranged densely and in two lines, are crescent to circular, drawn out from an egg-shaped base into a long awl, 1.6 to 2 centimeters long, not wrinkled, with flat and entire margins. The leaf veins are short and double or may be absent entirely. Branch leaves are shorter and narrower compared to the stem leaves.

The lamina cells in the middle of the leaf are blunt-linear, 6 to 7 µm wide and up to 10 times as long as they are wide, thickened and spotted. Leaf-wing cells are orange in color, square to rounded or oval and strongly thickened.

The moss is diocesan . Sporogons are very rare.

Distribution and location requirements

Hypnum bambergeri is widespread in the arctic-alpine region and occurs in Europe, North Asia and North America. In Central Europe, the occurrence is limited to the Alps, here it is widespread at altitudes of around 1700 to 2800 meters. It grows on damp limestone rocks.
