In the pituitary (hypopituitarism) is a disorder of production and therefore to an inadequate secretion of hormones of the pituitary gland . A distinction is the sub-function of the anterior pituitary ( hypopituitarism , abbreviation: hypopituitarism, synonyn: hypopituitarism , Crohn Simmonds or Simmondssche disease ) and the lower function of the pituitary ( Hypophysenhinterlappeninsuffizienz , abbreviation: HHL insufficiency).
The resulting disturbances result from the physiological effects of the respective hormones.
causes
- Tumors
- Injuries: traumatic brain injuries, birth trauma (more common in breech births), (total) hypophysectomy
- Brain necrosis , special form: Sheehan syndrome
- Inflammation
- autoimmune reactions
- rare syndromes such as Pallister Hall syndrome
or unknown (idiopathic)
Symptoms
- Menstrual cycle disorders ( amenorrhea , polymenorrhea )
- Disorders of growth ( short stature ): pituitary dwarfism (Nanosomia pituitaria)
- Diabetes insipidus
- Obesity by slowing down the metabolism of fat
- Disruption of the natural formation of the primary genital organs
- generally a lack of puberty
therapy
Pituitary insufficiency is treated surgically or with medication, depending on the cause. To do this, the various hormones that are not produced in the body are substituted. But not the releasing hormones are replaced, but hormones such as B. testosterone , thyroxine , somatotropin , cortisol .
