Hypselobarbus curmuca , engl. Curmuca Carp , Koracha , Kooral , കൂരല് or ചുണ്ടന് in Hindi, is a large species of carp fish that is endemic to India . The species was also described under the synonyms Barbus curmuca , Barbus guentheri , Cyprinus curmuca , Gobio canarensis , Gobio curmuca , Gonoproktopterus curmuca and Puntius curmuca .

description

The fish have a copper-brown color and the fins are partly reddish. The caudal fin has characteristic orange-red and black stripes. The fish can reach a length of 120 centimeters. This specimen weighed about 20 kilograms and was caught in a body of water in the Western Ghats .

distribution and habitat

The species of fish lives mainly in rivers in the mountainous region, where Hypselobarbus curmuca can be found in deep pools or in shady sections of water. There are populations in Godavari , Cauvery , Krishna River, and Periyar Lake.

Way of life

Hypselobarbus curmuca lives and reproduces in mountain rivers, but also migrates in reservoirs in search of food. They feed on algae and insect larvae. Spawning areas are smaller tributaries or streams with sandy and herbaceous subsoil.

Hypselobarbus curmuca is used as a food fish and is kept experimentally in aquaculture .
