hz-Programm is a typographic typesetting program for computers that was developed by the German typographer Hermann Zapf and Peter Karow from the Hamburg company URW Type Foundry . The aim of the hz program was to achieve , for the first time with a computer program, typesetting that comes close to the type quality of the 42-line Gutenberg Bible .

The hz program was the first program that the justification , not only to achieve altered word spacing to a balanced typeface, but also the kerning and the set width of each letter so changed that as a result of the gray level of the compound face appeared evenly.

The hz program was never distributed as a software product. The process was patented on October 19, 1984 by the European Patent Office under number 0 466 953 B1. The company Adobe later bought the patent on to the brief method in its program InDesign to use.
