Häckerle or Häckele (Polish: Hekele ) is a traditional fish dish in German and Polish cuisine that originally comes from Silesia .

Häckerle consists of salted herring ( matjes ), which, depending on the recipe, are either finely chopped or turned through a meat grinder and mixed with ingredients such as finely chopped hard-boiled eggs , bacon or meat , onions and pickles . Häckerle is served either with jacket potatoes or with strong bread .

One variant is known in Poland as Tatar śledziowy - "Herring tatar " .
